Up until recently the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. However, silence is no longer an option.
The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an early bird's ancestor. This is only one aspect of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a theory of science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or entire genomes. Over many generations, these changes can result in the creation of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It explains how individuals who have advantages are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.
The term "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has changed in both science and elsewhere. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species changed into other species in a certain way. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species change into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.
More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living organisms develop traits that improve their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. As time passes, genetic variation can lead a population to develop new physical characteristics or biological functions. This variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and is the primary driver behind evolutionary changes. Other changes that aren't genetic, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed down to the next generation.
Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, in spite of the fact that it has been proven to be true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They argue that the concept should not be taught at school. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high-school textbooks which includes the removal of any mention of the evolutionary history of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur that is thought to be the ancestor of birds.

The most common type of creationist is known as the YEC. They believe that God created the universe exactly in the way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of six days of creation was literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently.
OECs may be less known however their beliefs are just as intense as those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.
Both types of creationism reject the scientific theories that biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life came to be on Earth. They argue that evolution is impossible because it requires the creation of a miracle, and the founders of modern science shied away from miracles due to fear that they would lose credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and call their position "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." The theory says that God creates the original species and allows them to evolve over time. Then the evolutionary changes produce new species that are similar to the original ones.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, known as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the original species were all created at the same time and that they evolved slowly afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.
In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. Numerous professional associations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain academic institutions and scientists are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of both evolution and creationism in their curriculum.
What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

A group dubbed the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research which is the driving force behind the campaign. The STR has won its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. The next goal is to take out the finch-research of Darwin's famed as well as on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families as well as individual members. On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have given talks on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
